Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA) Plastic Scrap for Sale, Lumps, Regrinds, Sheet, Offcuts, 100% Acrylic
PMMA Scrap For sale, also known as Poly Methyl Methacrylate, is a transparent thermoplastic commonly used as a lightweight and shatter-resistant alternative to glass. It is also known by various commercial names such as Plexiglas, Acrylite, and Lucite.
Structure and Properties of PMMA
Non-Crystalline Polymer: PMMA is a non-crystalline polymer with excellent light transmittance. It is often referred to as good light transmittance plexiglass.
Density and Specific Gravity: The density of PMMA ranges from 1.14 to 1.20 g/cm³, with a specific gravity of 1.19.
Light Transmittance: PMMA boasts a high light transmittance of 92%, making it ideal for applications requiring clarity and transparency.
Mechanical Strength: PMMA has high mechanical strength, is lightweight, provides UV protection, and resists outdoor aging. However, it has poor heat resistance, low impact intensity, and is particularly sensitive to notch impact.
Insulating Properties: PMMA has excellent insulating properties.
General Performance
Transparency: PMMA is the most transparent polymer among all transparent resins, with a light transmittance of 92% at a 3 mm thickness. Its transparency may decrease slightly after impact modifications.
Low Atomization: PMMA has very low atomization, ensuring clarity.
Mechanical Properties
Strength: PMMA's mechanical strength is ten times higher than that of ordinary glass, although its durability is only average compared to other plastics.
Surface Hardness: The surface hardness of PMMA is close to that of aluminum and is the highest among all transparent resins. It has excellent anti-wear properties and cannot be scratched with nails.
Brittleness: PMMA is lightweight and brittle, prone to cracking or developing a silver appearance under stress.
Thermal Properties
Heat Resistance: PMMA has poor heat resistance, with a usage temperature limit of 80°C. Its heat resistance can be improved by copolymerization or cross-linking with ethylene glycol diester acrylate or propylene methacrylate.
Specific Heat: PMMA's specific heat is lower than that of most thermoplastics, allowing for rapid thermoplastic processing.
Cold Resistance: PMMA maintains a certain degree of cold resistance, with impact intensity varying minimally at temperatures as low as -50°C to -60°C.
