EthernetPassiveOpticalNetworks(GEPONorEPON)istheleadingtechnologybeingusedinFTTx(FTTH)deployments.PONisdifferentthanotheropticalnetworktopologiesinthatitisaPointtoMulti-Point(P2MP)topology.FromtheCentralOffice’s(CO)OpticalLineTerminal(OLT,withSFPGEPONtransceiver/module)asinglestrandoffibergoesouttoapassiveopticalsplitterwhereitssignalismultipliedto32(64)differentlines.TheTransmitandReceivesignalsoperateondifferentwavelengthsallowingbi-directionaloperationoverasinglefiber.AnythingtransmittedfromtheOLTistransmittedtoall32lines.Itisuptothecustomer’ssystem(OpticalNetworkUnit-ONU)todeterminewhatpacketsareforthatcustomer.Allotherpacketsarediscarded.ThePONcurrentstandardshavedefineddownstreamdataratesupto1.25Gbps.
