DL-Methionine
Appearance and Crystal Morphology of DL-Methionine
At room temperature and normal pressure, DL-methionine exists as a white, odorless crystalline powder with a slightly sweet taste. Unlike the needle-like crystals of L-methionine, the crystals of DL-methionine exhibit a rhombic or prismatic morphology, which is caused by the more symmetrical intermolecular packing formed by the racemic mixture.
The crystal surface of DL-methionine is smooth and has a weak pearlescent luster. Under dry conditions, it has good fluidity and is not prone to agglomeration; however, it will absorb moisture and agglomerate when exposed to high-humidity environments for a long time, but the agglomerated powder can be restored to a loose state by gentle grinding.
The color of DL-methionine is stable under normal storage conditions, and it will not turn yellow or decompose due to light exposure, which is superior to some sulfur-containing amino acids (e.g., L-cysteine) in terms of light stability.
