Complexation Properties of L-cysteine S-sulfate sodium salt

Complexation Properties of L-cysteine S-sulfate sodium salt
L-cysteine S-sulfate sodium salt has multiple coordination sites (amino nitrogen, carboxylate oxygen, and sulfonate sulfur), enabling it to form stable complexes with a variety of metal ions, which is one of its important chemical properties in the field of heavy metal detoxification.
·Complexation with transition metal ions: It can form stable chelate complexes with transition metal ions such asCu^2+,Zn^2+, andFe^3+. The coordination mode is that the amino nitrogen and carboxylate oxygen act as bidentate ligands to coordinate with metal ions, and the sulfonate group can enhance the stability of the complex through electrostatic interactions. For example, the complex formed withCu^2+has a stability constant (logK) of approximately 10.5, which is significantly higher than that of L-cysteine complexes.
·Complexation with heavy metal ions: It has a strong complexation ability with toxic heavy metal ions such asPb^2+,Cd^2+, andHg^2+. The formed complexes are insoluble in water and can be excreted from the body through the digestive tract, making the compound a potential heavy metal detoxification agent. The complexation reaction is pH-dependent, with the best complexation effect achieved in weakly acidic conditions (pH 4.0–5.0).
