压缩空气是一种广泛应用于工业活动中的安全、可靠的动力源。据估计大约有90%的企业在其运行的各个领域使用了压缩空气。然而与气体、水和电力不同的是压缩空气在使用现场制取，用户可控制压缩空气的品质和运行成本。压缩空气并不是一种没有问题的动力源，在实际运行时所有的系统都会遭遇到性能和稳定性问题，但是几乎所有的这些问题都可归结为由污染引起，这些主要污染源有：水蒸气，凝结水，水雾（气溶胶），大气尘埃，微生物，铁锈，管道剥落物，液体油，油雾（气溶胶），油蒸气。 压缩空气中最大的污染是来自于压缩机吸入的大气而并不是通常认为的来自于压缩机本身。最多和最棘手的污染物是水，它约占压缩空气系统中可发现的液体污染物的99.9%。高效压缩空气过滤技术不但可去除固体颗粒和油，更重要的是能去除水雾，这是运行一个既有效率又具有成本效益的压缩空气系统的关键。
