DL-tryptophan
DL-tryptophan’s versatility stems from its role as a source of essential amino acids, a chemical precursor, and a research tool, with its most significant applications in animal nutrition and industrial synthesis. The practical utility of DL-tryptophan largely depends on the L-tryptophan component, as D-tryptophan is not efficiently utilized in most biological systems. However, the racemic mixture is often more cost-effective to produce synthetically than pure L-tryptophan, making it a preferred choice in applications where high purity of the L-form is not critical (e.g., animal feed).
