Tap hole mass is used in the Blast furnace nozzle during the smelting process to prevent the molten metal from entering the nozzle.The exposed surface of the sand produces a sintered layer thick enough to prevent molten metal penetration yet thin enough to allow it to break under the pressure of the molten metal when the nozzle is opened and the free flowing sand beneath the sintered layer flows out of the open nozzle
