A managed fiber switchis a network device which can be configured and properly managed to offer a more tailored solution for those who has more network demands. Managed fiber switches are designed to deliver the most demanding functions for the network needs. VLAN is the most commonly needed and used for some basic managed switch models. It simply meets the demand of individual and confidential data transmission between separate LAN port end users. Except VLAN, there are many diverse and rich features such as CLI, SNMP, IP routing, QoS, etc.. Managed fiber switches are often used in the core layer of a network, especially for the large and complex data centers. However, in order to meet different kinds of networks demands, there are some smart switches which are only lightly managed. For the users who has limited budgets or don’t require full management functions of switches, they can choose smart switch as an alternative. In this way, we developed different kinds of managed fiber switch to meet different users’ demands.
Regarding the question of what kind to choose, there are lots of aspects to be considered. Normally it depends on the scale of the network and the features required for the application as well as the complexity of the network. Most of the small networks does not require any managed fiber switches as what they need is only the basic functions of unmanaged fiber switches or even simple Ethernet switches. However, for some big networks, thousands of users might use their network service at the same time. Except a solid and secure way to control the data transmission, under such circumstances, a strong protection of the whole network is also required. In such cases, managed fiber switch would find its perfect place in the network.
Basically speaking, when looking for managed switches, there are two types. Smart switches are those with a limited number of configuration options. And they will be a lot more affordable than the fully-managed types. Fully managed solutions are targeted at servers, enterprises and big data centers. The latter are destinied for intensive workloads, huge amount of traffic data transmission where customized and diuversified configuration methods are necessary.
