Physical properties of glycine
1. Appearance and Odor
At room temperature, it is a white crystalline or crystalline powder, odorless, and sweet in taste.
2. Solubility
It is highly soluble in water, and the aqueous solution is slightly acidic;
It is slightly soluble in ethanol and methanol, and almost insoluble in organic solvents such as ether and acetone.
3. Melting Point and Thermal Stability
The melting point is approximately 233–236 ℃. It melts and decomposes easily when heated, and undergoes deamination and dehydrogenation at high temperatures.
4. Crystals and Density
It belongs to the monoclinic crystal system, with a moderate density, weak hygroscopicity, and stable at room temperature.
5. Optical Properties
Due to the absence of chiral carbon atoms in the molecule, it has no optical activity and does not rotate polarized light.
6. Acidity, Alkalinity and Buffering Capacity
It contains both amino (-NH₂) and carboxyl (-COOH) groups, making it a diprotic electrolyte;
It has significant pH buffering capacity, with excellent buffering effect in the weakly acidic to neutral range.
