Phospholipids

Phospholipids are essential nutrients for humans, playing critical roles in cell membrane structure, lipid metabolism, and brain function. As such, they are widely used to fortify functional foods and dietary supplements:
Brain Health and Cognitive Function: Phosphatidylcholine (PC), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), and phosphatidylserine (PS) are key components of brain cell membranes. They are added to infant formulas, elderly nutritional supplements, and functional beverages to support brain development in infants and prevent age-related cognitive decline. For example, infant formulas often contain soy lecithin or milk-derived phospholipids to mimic breast milk’s nutritional profile.
Liver Health: Phosphatidylcholine (especially from soy or egg yolk) promotes liver lipid metabolism and helps prevent fatty liver disease by facilitating the transport of triglycerides from the liver. It is added to liver-protective functional foods and nutritional drinks.
Cardiovascular Health: Phospholipids (e.g., phosphatidylinositol, PI) help regulate cholesterol metabolism by increasing HDL ("good cholesterol") levels and reducing LDL ("bad cholesterol") oxidation. They are incorporated into heart-healthy foods such as functional oils, cereal bars, and fortified dairy products.
Sports Nutrition: Phospholipids enhance the absorption of fat-soluble nutrients (e.g., vitamins A, D, E, K) and improve energy metabolism. They are added to sports drinks, protein powders, and energy bars to support athletic performance and recovery.
