DL-Alanine
DL-Alanine is a racemic mixture of two optical isomers: L-Alanine (L-α-alanine) and D-Alanine (D-α-alanine). As a type of α-amino acid (a class of organic compounds with both an amino group [-NH₂] and a carboxyl group [-COOH] attached to the same carbon atom), it plays important roles in biochemistry, food science, and industrial applications. Core Chemical & Structural Characteristics Chemical Formula: C₃H₇NO₂ Molecular Weight: 89.09 g/mol Optical Activity: Since it is a 1:1 mixture of L-Alanine (naturally occurring, levorotatory, meaning it rotates plane-polarized light to the left) and D-Alanine (synthetic, dextrorotatory, rotating light to the right), their optical activities cancel out. Thus, DL-Alanine is optically inactive (racemic). Physical Properties: It appears as a white, odorless, crystalline powder with high solubility in water (about 16.7 g/100 mL at 20°C) and low solubility in organic solvents like ethanol or ether. It has a slightly sweet taste.
