Antibiotic overuse leads to the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (a global health threat). Nisin, as a narrow-spectrum antimicrobial, offers a safer alternative for preventing or treating mild bacterial infections, reducing reliance on broad-spectrum antibiotics:
Treating mild bacterial infections: For mild GI infections (e.g., traveler’s diarrhea caused by Gram-positive pathogens) or skin infections (e.g., S. aureus folliculitis), topical or oral nisin supplements can reduce symptoms without promoting antibiotic resistance. Unlike antibiotics, nisin’s mechanism of action (cell membrane disruption) is less likely to induce resistance, as it targets a fundamental bacterial structure that is difficult to mutate.
Preventing post-antibiotic dysbiosis: Antibiotics kill both harmful and beneficial gut bacteria, leading to post-antibiotic diarrhea (PAD) or CDI. Co-supplementation with nisin during antibiotic treatment (at a dose of 500 IU/day) reduces the overgrowth of antibiotic-resistant pathogens (e.g., C. difficile) while preserving beneficial probiotics, lowering PAD incidence by 20–25% in clinical trials.
