Acid-Base Behavior of L-tryptophan
L-tryptophan is an amphoteric compound, capable of acting as both an acid (via carboxyl group) and a base (via amino group). It has three ionizable groups:Carboxyl group (pKa₁ ≈ 2.38): Donates a proton in acidic conditions.Amino group (pKa₂ ≈ 9.39): Accepts a proton in basic conditions.Indole nitrogen (pKa₃ ≈ 16.0): Weakly acidic, but only ionizes under strongly alkaline conditions. Its isoelectric point (pI), where the molecule has a net charge of zero, is around 5.89.
