DL-Methionine
Optical Activity of DL-Methionine
As a racemic mixture, DL-methionine isoptically inactive, with a specific optical rotation of[α]_D^25=0°(measured in 5% aqueous solution). This is because the dextrorotatory effect of L-methionine ([α]_D^25=+21.5°) and the levorotatory effect of D-methionine ([α]_D^25=-21.5°) cancel each other out exactly in the equimolar mixture.
The optical activity of DL-methionine can be restored by chiral resolution: if DL-methionine is separated into pure L-methionine and D-methionine by methods such as fractional crystallization or chiral chromatography, the two enantiomers will exhibit opposite optical rotation directions and equal absolute values of specific optical rotation.
