Photodegradation of L-tryptophan
The indole ring is highly sensitive to ultraviolet (UV) light and oxygen. Under UV irradiation (e.g., sunlight), L-tryptophan undergoes photodegradation, producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) and breakdown products such as kynurenine, formylkynurenine, and ammonia. This property necessitates protection from light during storage. Reactions Involving the Indole RingNinhydrin Reaction: Like other amino acids, it reacts with ninhydrin to form a purple-colored complex, a characteristic used in qualitative and quantitative analysis.Ehrlich’s Reaction: The indole ring reacts with p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (Ehrlich’s reagent) in acidic conditions to form a red-violet complex, a reaction used to detect tryptophan in proteins or biological samples. Oxidation: The indole ring is susceptible to oxidation by strong oxidizing agents (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, ozone), leading to ring cleavage and formation of various oxidation products.
